And while the last Austrian in the singles draw, Andrea Haider-Maurer, bowed out on Tuesday, plenty of big names were scheduled to appear. Top seed Juan Ignacio Chela needed three sets to overcome a strong challenge from Dominic Thiem’s conqueror, Daniel Gimeno-Traver. The unseeded Spainard used his big forehand effectively to even the match at one set a piece but too many unforced errors cost him in the third.

Even though the sun was shining and the crowds once again flocked to centre court, the fortunes of the Austrian players didn’t improve.

And even though the former world number one went down in straight sets to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, he gave Monday’s centre court crowd plenty to cheer about.
